
Hales’ grand slam highlights #14 Baseball’s mercy-rule win over Newberry
Salisbury, N.C. —- The 14th-ranked Catawba College baseball team scored multiple runs in four of the first five innings at Newman Park on Friday night, cruising to a 13-2 victory over visiting Newberry in South Atlantic Conference action.

- The Catawba Indians recorded all four extra-base hits and both homers

INDIVIDUAL LEADERS
- Cole Hales was 2-for-2 with a grand slam, five RBI and three runs scored
- Hunter Atkins added three hits including two doubles with five RBI
- Nathan Chrismon singled, walked and scored four times

- Payne Stolsworth earned his team-leading sixth win on the mound this season, tossing six innings, allowing two runs on just four hits, striking out five
HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST INNING
- Dunlap got the scoring started early with a leadoff homer
- Sam Hunter and Chrismon singled; Hales' walk loaded the bases
- Logan Dyer sent a sac fly to center field to score the speedy Hunter
- Atkins' double down the left field line scored one more, leading 3-0 after the first
SECOND INNING
- A walk, a single and a hit-by-pitch loaded the bases with two outs
- Hales hit Catawba's first grand slam of the season to push the lead to 7-0
FOURTH INNING
- Atkins drove in two more on his second double of the night, this one to right center to extend the Catawba lead to 9-0
FIFTH INNING
- Newberry got two on in the fifth on a walk and a hit-by-pitch
- Campbell McCurry's cue-shot single down the right field line scored the only two Wolves runs
- A walk and two hit-by-pitches loaded the bases with one out
- Hales' hit-by-pitch scored another run
- Dyer reached on an another but was credited with the second RBI of the inning
- Atkins delivered his third RBI base hit of the night, scoring two more on a single through the left side

- Catawba and Newberry wrap up the series with a doubleheader on Saturday; first pitch for game one is set for 1 p.m.
