Hubbard walks off in Baseball’s win over Shippensburg in home opener

Salisbury, N.C. —- Catawba sophomore infielder Ty Hubbard drew a bases-loaded walk with two outs in the ninth inning for the walk-off win in the Catawba College baseball team's 5-4 home-opening win versus Shippensburg Friday afternoon at Newman Park.

 

TEAM STATS

- Shippensburg out-hit Catawba 11-6

- Both teams recorded two extra-base hits with the Raiders hitting the lone homer

- Both teams committed an error

- The Catawba Indians had three of four stolen bases in the game

- Catawba's pitchers allowed four earned runs on 11 hits and three walks, striking out six; Shippensburg's staff allowed five earned runs on six hits and five walks, striking out 10

 

INDIVIDUAL LEADERS

- Sam Hunter went 3-for-5 with a triple and two runs scored

- Cooper Bryson doubled and scored the game-winning run

- Hubbard drew the walk-off walk on a 3-2 count with two outs in the ninth for his second RBI

- Carson Edmiston, Mason Gwyn and Cole Hales combined to provide four shutout innings of relief, allowing just two hits and striking out three

 

HOW IT HAPPENED

FIRST INNING

- Shippensburg's Justin Byler roped a two-run homer down the right field line to give the Raiders a 2-0 lead

 

SECOND INNING

- Carter Hinds' two-out single extended the SU lead to 3-0

 

THIRD INNING

- The Raiders led 4-0 after Gio Calamia's sac fly

 

FOURTH INNING

- Hales' hit-by-pitch loaded the bases with one out

- Hubbard got the hit the next batter to get on the board

- Logan Rogers' groundout drove in a run before Jackson Price singled in another run to bring the Catawba Indians within a run

 

EIGHTH INNING

- Hunter tripled down the left field line to lead off the eighth

- Hales' fielder's choice scored Hunter to tie the game

 

NINTH INNING

- Bryson's one-out double in the ninth brought the go-ahead run into scoring position

- Bo Rusher's walk loaded the bases

- With a 3-2 count with two outs, Hubbard forced the walk-off walk

 

UP NEXT

- Catawba continues their three-game set with Shippensburg back at Newman Park tomorrow at 1 p.m.
