Beach Volleyball opens play at Coastal Carolina Invite

Conway, S.C. —- The Catawba College Beach Volleyball team was in action on Friday at the Coastal Carolina Beach Volleyball Complex, dropping a morning contest by a score of 5-0 against the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers before being just edged out in a 3-2 thriller by the Emmanuel Lions in an afternoon showdown 

 

MATCH ONE | Catawba 0, Coastal Carolina 5 

HOW IT HAPPENED 

-  Hayes Smith and Savanna Corrales would be defeated on Court No. 1 in two sets by Martine Kragholm and Sarah Riedell, 21-9 and 21-15  

- Christina Knotts and Morgan Childresstook on Julia Blazek and Emma Plutnicki on Court No. 2, with the Coastal Carolina duo taking another two set win, 21-14 and 21-8 

- Katie Willingham and Ragan Ballwere in action on the No. 3 court against the Chanticleers' tandem of Emma Kunaus and Ellie Hanford. Kunaus and Hanford would take the match in two sets, 21-4 and 21-10, as Coastal Carolina earned their third point 

- JJ Quarrels and Brooklyn Calkins went up against Denisse Morgenstern and Madie Lichty in the No. 4 position, with the Catawba pairing being defeated 21-12 and 21-9 

- Kennedy Kimbro and Jada Whittalcompeted on the No. 5 court against Madison Allred and Raychal Ehlers, with Coastal Carolina earning their fifth and final point as Allred and Ehlers took a 21-10, 21-15 victory 

- Lauren Shepherd and Megan Halford would go up against Elena Sanchez and Celia Ryan in a sixth match, with Sanchez and Ryan winning in two sets by scores of 21-8 and 21-13    

 
MATCH TWO | Catawba 2, Emmanuel 3 

HOW IT HAPPENED 

- Smith and Corrales went against Izabela Zukowska and Ellie Jackson on Court No. 1, with the Lions' tandem just edging out Smith and Corrales in a 21-19 first set. Zukowska and Jackson would take the win in the second set, giving Emmanuel the point with a 21-13 frame and knotting the score up at its conclusion, 2-2  

- Knotts and Childress would play out a three-set contest on Court No. 2 against Layla Bland and Ella Johns, with everything on the line between the two sides. Knotts and Childress earned a 21-17 victory in the opening se, to which Bland and Johns would battle back with a 21-14 win to force the third frame. It would be the Lions' pair who would just win in a 17-15 grudge match, earning Emmanuel it's third and final point 

- Willingham and Ball took on Rachel McGlamery and Brianna Bigelow on Court No. 3, emerging victorious after two sets. The Catawba duo would roll to a 21-9 win in the first set, and would hold on for a thrilling 26-24 triumph in the second set as they held on for a huge point that gave Catawba the lead at the time, 2-1 

- Kimbro and Whittal would be just edged out on Court No. 4 against Lauren Pace and Aaliyah Lobendahn in three sets. The Catawba duo would clinch the first set 22-20, but would be answered by a 21-19 response from Pace and Lobendahn in the second set as both sides went back-and-forth in the opening two frames. In the end, it would be the Lions' tandem who emerged with the victory thanks to a 15-11 third set, tying the match then at 1-1 

- Quarrels and Calkins took down Cailin Pritchard and Abbye Carver on the No. 5 court, dominating to the tune of a 21-5 first set only to be stunned by Pritchard and Carver in the second set as they rallied for a 21-19 win to force a third frame. Quarrels and Calkins would hold firm, rediscovering their first-set mojo for a 15-5 win and the match point to give Catawba a 1-0 lead at the start 

Shepherd and Claire Vinskus battled against Hannah Farrar and Alondra Rios in another No. 6 match, with Emmanuel's pairing taking a close three-set victory. Farrar and Rios claimed the first set, 21-13, before Shepherd and Vinskus rallied through a 21-18 victory to set up a third set. The final frame saw both sides battle to a 14-14 scoreline, before Farrar and Rios were able to escape with a 16-14 triumph

- Catawba Beach Volleyball returns to action on Saturday, March 30th, as they gear up for another pair of matches in Conway, S.C. at the Coastal Carolina Beach Volleyball Complex. They'll get another chance at Emmanuel in a morning showdown set for 8:00 a.m. EDT, before taking on the Erskine Flying Fleet in an afternoon matchup set for 2:00 p.m. EDT
