
Beach Volleyball splits in opening day at Berry
Mount Berry, Ga. —- The Catawba College Beach Volleyball team was in action on Friday at Briggs Beach Bash, splitting on the day with a 5-0 victory against Gaston in a morning matchup before falling in a 1-4 loss to Florida Southern in the afternoon as Catawba now holds a record of 3-4 on the season

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Savannah Corrales and Hayes Smith set the tone for Catawba from the start, taking both of their matches in hard-fought fashion as they won both by a score of 22-20 on Court No. 1. That would be the closest set of matches in Catawba's opening win
- Christina Knotts and Morgan Childress made it 2-0 to Catawba as they claimed the win on Court No. 2, taking the first set by a score of 21-14 and then finishing the job with a 21-16 second set
- JJ Quarrels and Kennedy Kimbro rolled to victory from the No. 3 position, taking a commanding 21-8 win in the opening set and then earning a 21-14 victory in the second set to ensure a Catawba victory with a 3-0 overall lead
- Katie Willingham and Brooklyn Calkins continued the momentum for Catawba, cruising to a pair of 21-13 wins on Court No. 4
- Jada Whittal and Ragan Ball ensured the 5-0 Catawba sweep by claiming the win on Court No. 5, 21-12 and 21-14, with all five Catawba duos winning in two sets in morning action

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Smith and Corrales took a 14-21 loss in the opening set before battling back with a 21-18 victory in set two, though they were unable to take the win as they fell 15-9 in the third and final frame on Court No. 1
- Knotts and Childress won their second match of the day from the No. 2 position, this time storming back from a 13-21 loss in the opening set to earn a thrilling 23-21 victory in the second set and a 15-12 victory in the third to tie things up, 1-1
- Quarrels and Kimbro dropped a hard fought match on Court No. 3, going down 18-21 and 17-21 in two sets
- Willingham and Caulkins came achingly close to winning the first set from the No. 4 position, just being edged out 21-23, and would drop the second set by a score of 13-21 as Florida Southern clinched a 3-1 lead
- Whittal and Ball were similarly beaten out on Court No. 5, taking the loss in two sets by scores of 15-21 and 11-21
