
Beach Volleyball drops pair at Carson-Newman
Jefferson City Tenn. —- The Catawba College Beach Volleyball team was in action on Friday at Carson-Newman, taking on the Eagles to open their South Atlantic Conference slate this season while also going head-to-head against the Erskine Flying Fleet afterwards in the first day of a back-to-back against both squads. Catawba would drop both games in the opening matchups, falling to Carson-Newman 4-1 and then dropping a close match against Erskine, 3-2

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Christina Knotts and Morgan Childress were just beaten out in the opening set of Flight No. 1, 19-21. They would be unable to keep pace in the second set, 16-21
- Savanna Corrales and Lauren Shepherd competed in Flight No. 2, falling by scores of 10-21 and 15-21
- Jada Whittal and Ragan Ball took on Flight No. 3, but went down 11-21 and 6-21
- JJ Quarrels and Kennedy Kimbro were able to earn a win for Catawba from the No. 4 position, notching a 21-17 win and a close 21-19 victory to clinch the victory
- Katie Willingham and Brooklyn Calkins competed on the No. 5 court

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Knotts and Childress led off for Catawba once again, but took another tough loss in sets of 13-21 and 10-21
- Corrales and Shepherd would fall 12-21 and 9-21 on court No. 2
- Whittal and Ball would also go down, 14-21 and 13-21, from the No. 3 position
- Quarrels and Kimbro won their second match of the day, rolling to victory through sets of 21-13 and 21-16 on Flight No. 4 to give Catawba a lifeline
- Willingham and Calkins won a hard-fought series from the No. 5 position, winning Catawba's only three-set match of the day. After just edging ahead 23-21 for a 1-0 lead, the pair would drop the second set 6-21. But Willingham and Calkins would rally, taking the decisive third match by a score of 15-12

- Catawba will be looking to rally on Saturday, as they get another chance against Carson-Newman and Erskine on matchday two. Catawba is set to take on the Eagles at 9 AM, and the Flying Fleet at 1 p.m.
