PREVIEW: #18 Baseball opens up SAC play with adjusted series vs. Anderson

Salisbury, N.C. —- The 18th-ranked Catawba College baseball team opens up action in South Atlantic Conference play on Friday at Newman Park versus Anderson University in a weather-adjusted schedule with a doubleheader on Friday and the series finale on Sunday.

 

THE MATCHUP

- Who: Anderson (4-2, 0-0 SAC) at #18 Catawba (4-3, 0-0 SAC)

- Where: Newman Park, Salisbury, N.C.

- When: Friday, Feb. 14, 3 p.m. & 6 p.m. (7-inning); Sunday, Feb. 16, 4 p.m.

THE PROBABLE PITCHING MATCHUPS

- Friday (Game one): Austin Fine (1-0, 3.21 ERA) vs Corben Childers (0-1, 2.35 ERA)

- Friday (Game two): Payne Stolsworth (1-1, 4.76 ERA) vs Walker Noland (1-0, 2.25 ERA)

- Sunday: Hayden Simmerson (0-1, 5.87 ERA) vs Walker Case (1-0, 1.80 ERA)

 

VERY GOUGE

- Casey Gouge excelled in his start on Sunday against Shippensburg, throwing six innings, allowing one run on four hits and one walk with a career-high 10 strikeouts

- The junior left-hander struck out seven in his first three innings alone, only allowing a run in the fifth when he allowed a walk and two singles

- Gouge has started in both of his appearances this season, but could also be in the mix to appear in high-leverage relief appearances

 

NOT YOUR TYPICAL LEADOFF MAN

- Nathan Chrismon leads the Catawba Indians with two homers and 10 RBI on the season

- The East Carolina transfer currently has double the number of runs driven in as the next Catawba Indian (Cole Hales - 5)

- Through 30 at-bats, Chrismon is hitting .267 with eight base hits, including a double and two homers with 10 RBI, two walks, a team-high four stolen bases and five runs scored

 

SCOUTING THE TROJANS

- Anderson entered the season ranked ninth in the SAC Baseball preseason poll after 10th in the league a season ago

- The Trojans did take a game off of Catawba in 2024, a seven-inning 3-1 loss for the Catawba Indians which was answered with a 22-0 drubbing in the rubber match of the series

- Anderson enters opening weekend of conference play at 4-2 overall, taking two of three from Emory & Henry, a split of two games with Limestone and a midweek win over Southern Wesleyan

 

UP NEXT

- After the Valentines' Day weekend series, Catawba plays in its first in-region midweek game of the year, traveling to 11th-ranked Mount Olive for a top-20 matchup
