
Lions defeat Catawba in SAC clash
The Mars Hill women's lacrosse team (3-4, 1-1 SAC) defeated Catawba (1-6, 0-1 SAC) by a score of 11-9 Saturday afternoon.
MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill women's lacrosse team (3-4, 1-1 SAC) defeated Catawba (1-6, 0-1 SAC) by a score of 11-9 Saturday afternoon.
The Lions led 4-1 after the first 15 minutes of play. Less than a minute into the contest, Samantha Newton scored her first of the contest and less than 20 seconds later, Mina Muirhead put the Lions up 2-0. Following a goal from Mary Sorvillo, Muirhead netted her second of the quarter while Haley Stallings capped off the Lions' scoring in the frame.
Both teams netted two goals in the second, sending the Lions into the half with a 6-3 lead. Alexa Tazzetta scored both Mars Hill goals in the stanza.
The Indians outscored Mars Hill 3-2 in the third with Sorvillo, Ella McCusker, and Kylie Harris scoring the goals. With less than 10 second remaining, a free position goal from Tazzetta, put the Lions up by two entering the fourth. The goal completed her hat-trick.
Harris pulled the Indians within one less than two minutes into the fourth, but a three-goal run by the Lions built the lead back to four with 6:39 remaining in the contest. Newton and Chandler Werner potted their second of the contest while Tazzetta netted her fourth of the game.
Joey Baillie led Catawba with four points (1g, 3a) followed by Sorvillo's three (3g). Tazzetta led Mars Hill with four goals while the trio of Werner, Newton, and Muirhead scored two goals apiece. Toni Morgon collected five groundballs and caused a game-high five turnovers.
Rebeca Sanchez earned her first win of the season, making five saves.
Mars Hill returns to action on Wednesday, March 15 when they host Limestone inside the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium. First draw is set for 4 p.m.
