Women’s Basketball survives after Wingate’s shot at the buzzer waved off
Salisbury, N.C. —- The Catawba College women's basketball team pulled out a rivalry victory over visiting Wingate University after the Bulldogs' last-second shot to tie the game was waved off, giving the Catawba Indians the 70-67 win in South Atlantic Conference play in Goodman Arena.
TEAM STATISTICS
- Wingate shot 24-for-56 (43 percent) from the field, while Catawba was 26-of-64 (41 percent) from the floor
- The Bulldogs were 5-for-11 (46 percent) from three-point range; the Catawba Indians shot 10-for-31 (32 percent) from deep
- WU was 14-for-17 (82 percent) from the free throw line, while Catawba was 8-for-11 (73 percent) from the charity stripe
- Wingate out-rebounded Catawba 42-29, but the Catawba Indians held the advantage in second-chance points, 14-12
- Catawba recorded 13 assists to 17 turnovers, while Wingate had 12 assists to 26 turnovers; the Catawba Indians led in points off turnovers 28-18
- Wingate led in points in the paints (30-28) and fastbreak points (11-9), while Catawba's bench doubled the Bulldogs' 32-16
INDIVIDUAL LEADERS
- Bailee Goodlett led a balanced Catawba scoring attack with 13 points, four assists and three steals
- Mary Spry chipped in with 12 big points off the bench on 5-for-10 shooting
- Janiya Foskey recorded her fifth double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds
- Julie Janus was the fourth Catawba Indian in double figures with a career-high 10 points with two three-pointers and three steals
- Jada Porter also added two triples for eight points
HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST QUARTER
- Wingate opened up an early 6-2 lead after Kyleigh Bacon's layup over a minute in
- Catawba responded with a 7-0 run with each of the last five from the freshman Janus to take the lead
- The Bulldogs answered with a 7-0 run if their own, leading 13-9 at the 6-minute mark
- The lead changes kept coming with Imani Williams and Porter canning back-to-back triples to retake the lead in a fast-paced first period
- A 9-0 Wingate run pushed their lead to six points with a minute to go
- Goodlett's layup and Brooklin Ingram's triple made it a one-point game, but Wingate drilled a jumper in the closing seconds to take a 26-23 lead in an entertaining opening 10 minutes
SECOND QUARTER
- Catawba began chipping away at Wingate's zone from long range in the second as back-to-back three-pointers from Goodlett and Porter shifted the lead in Catawba's favor near the midway point
- The Catawba Indians held their lead into the second half, guarding a 40-37 lead at the break
THIRD QUARTER
- Catawba caught fire out of the gates in the third quarter, scoring nine straight to take a 12-point lead, forcing a Wingate timeout
- The Bulldogs got back within eight at the midway point with back-to-back baskets
- WU's 12-2 run brought back Wingate within a single possession
- Goodlett's jumper gave Catawba a 53-49 lead heading into the fourth
FOURTH QUARTER
- The Bulldogs cut their deficit to a single point after Anya Massey's three-pointer at the 8:28 mark
- Williams' key three-pointer pushed the Catawba lead to six at the 5:51 mark
- Wingate once again got within a point with 2:02, but the teams traded missed shots until Foskey was fouled with 12 seconds left after an offensive rebound
- After two missed free throws, Catawba forced a turnover on Wingate's potential try for a go-ahead shot on a held jump ball
- Goodlett drained both free throws for a full three-point lead and Aniyah Oliver's potential game-tying three-pointer was released after the final buzzer sounded
