Softball falls in pair at Lenoir-Rhyne

Hickory, N.C. —- The Catawba College softball team continued action in South Atlantic Conference play in Hickory on Saturday, falling in a doubleheader at Lenoir-Rhyne.

 

GAME ONE | Lenoir-Rhyne 9, Catawba 1 - 6 innings

TEAM STATISTICS

- Lenoir-Rhyne out-hit 15-4

- The Bears recorded three of four extra-base hits; Catawba had the lone homer

- The Catawba Indians left three runners on base; LR stranded five

- Lenoir-Rhyne recorded the lone stolen base in the game

- The Bears' starter allowed a run on four hits, striking out five; Catawba's staff allowed nine runs on 15 hits and two walks, striking out one

 

INDIVIDUAL LEADERS

- Brianna Gallagher was 2-for-3 with a homer

- Molly Strider and Courtnee Carter also recorded base hits for Catawba

 

HOW IT HAPPENED

FOURTH INNING

- Gallagher gave Catawba the lead on a leadoff homer in the fourth

- Three singles loaded the bases for the Bears with no outs in the bottom half

- Madison Wilson took the lead with a two-RBI single

- A two-RBI double and an RBI single gave LR the 5-1 lead after four

 

FIFTH INNING

- Lenoir-Rhyne's RBI double and a sac fly boosted their lead to 7-1

 

SIXTH INNING

- The game ended on LR's two-RBI single down the line

TEAM STATISTICS

- Lenoir-Rhyne out-hit Catawba 11-5

- The Bears had five of seven extra-base hits; LR had the lone homer

- The Catawba Indians left five runners on base; Lenoir-Rhyne stranded seven

- Catawba had the lone stolen base in the game

- The Bears' starter threw six shutout innings on five hits, striking out four; Catawba's staff allowed eight runs on 11 hits with six walks, striking out two

 

INDIVIDUAL LEADERS

- Gallagher doubled twice in three at-bats

- Grace Flynn, Strider and Brianna Herring singled

 

HOW IT HAPPENED

SECOND INNING

- LR loaded the bases in the second with no outs

- Two RBI singles gave the Bears an early lead

 

THIRD INNING

- A sac fly and a bases-loaded walk made it 4-0

 

FOURTH INNING

- A leadoff Bears homer made it 5-0

 

SIXTH INNING

- LR scored two on a double in the sixth and another bases-loaded walk activated the mercy rule

 

UP NEXT

- Catawba returns to action on Monday, traveling to Southern Wesleyan for a doubleheader at 2 and 4 p.m.
